Kingship

God is the King of the Israelites but the people tell Samuel, appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.” (1 Samuel 8:5). Samuel prays about it, And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.”( 1 Samuel 8: 7) So Samuel ends up anointing the peoples choice, the tall strapping Saul as King. He ends up being the kind of cruel faithless King God warns about. Kings no longer rule but world leaders do and we have witness in the last century how they run off the rails in cruelty, corruption and violence. Only God is the true wise, just and gentle Lord. So the true anointed King, a man after God’s own heart, will be the young David the son of Jesse. According to Isaiah 11:1-9 a branch will come from the stump of Jesse who the Spirit of the Lord will be upon and who with righteousness will judge the needy. The Messiah, the Christ in David’s line will be the true King who brings the Kingdom of God. He is Jesus Christ the son of David (Matthew 1:1), the Son of God (Matthew 16:16). Is our allegiance to Him or do we think we can run things better ourselves just as the Israelites thought?
